The International Development Association (IDA) is the part of the World Bank that helps the world's poorest countries. It is a cooperative owned by 188 member states.
Every three years, the shareholders agree to replenish the IDA funds. This fund-raising effort is supported by a communications campaign in which the World Bank showcases successes and results from IDA-supported projects. For donor countries and their taxpayers, seeing documentary evidence of development aid effectiveness is critical to justify continued IDA funding.
In late 2006, for the 15th round of IDA replenishments (IDA15), the World Bank's IDA-15 team enlisted me to help them with visual documentation of successes, as well as challenges faced by Africa's poorest countries.
The goal was to show that IDA projects were successful, and also that much work was still to be done and would need continued funding.
