Photography and Multimedia
Fast-forward 25 years: My first assignment with the World Bank, the premier agency for international development. My photographs will support a large program for peace and cooperation in East Africa, the Nile Basin Initiative.
This takes me to Tanzania where I visit a series of projects on the island of Zanzibar. I find rich stories told by people who, with small grants, their own community vision and hard work, have created a better future for their families. Deep inside I know this is what I want to do — to have a life in photography and to tell compelling stories of development.
I eventually put aside a planned return to life as a diplomat, with all its benefits and security; I took the leap to pursue photography full-time. By now I had a solid body of work to show, and I was able to secure commitment from enough World Bank clients to do documentary photography full-time.
