October 29, 1978. A nineteen-year-old Norwegian student visits Tijuana, Mexico and is appalled by what he sees: a community of families living on the city garbage dump – men, women and children scavenging for food to eat and salvage to sell. He photographs some of the kids; their portraits are published on the front page of his college newspaper.
I was that student and that was the first time I saw real poverty up close. I never forgot the experience.
